The last time Mount Batur blew up

This is one of the most frequent question I get asked: “When was the last time Mount Batur blew up?”

The last gurgle and rumble was just over a year ago now, but the last time Mount Batur put on a pyrotechnics show was 1999, and you’re in luck! I just found a website with photos taken by an intrepid mountain climber who went up the top while the volcano was spewing ash from the new vent on its side.

Of course this eruption was nowhere near the scale of the blast that created the crater lake. The last major eruption of Mount Batur was in 1972, it involved a lot of lava flowing, and you can still see it as the black patch on the mountainside.
